AstraZeneca, the UK-leading pharmaceutical company, has received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Nexium NexTab, a combination of Prilosec, Nexium and Prilosec OTC, for the treatment of heartburn and acid reflux.
The drug is a cost-effective and safe alternative to over-the-counter Nexium, which is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
The drug is priced at $3,349 for a supply of 30 capsules and $1,934 for a supply of 30 tablets, the FDA said.
The company will start marketing the drug in the US in the first half of 2016, and in Canada in the second half of 2016.
Patients will be able to use the drug for up to five years, while they are advised to consult their doctor before starting treatment.
“Our approval allows us to offer a reliable and cost-effective treatment option for patients who may need it,” said James C. Baker, president, AstraZeneca. “We are pleased to have received this final approval for this important innovation.”

The FDA granted approval for AstraZeneca’s Nexium NexTab, which is used to treat GERD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, in the second half of this year.
The drug has a similar mechanism of action to omeprazole, another acid-reflux medicine. It works by blocking the action of the enzyme PPP-5α, which is responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
